Arabic and other languages

Write Office papers in any of the app's 20 languages, put a second language in the same paper, and translate a text, a scan or a file.

Papers in 20 languages

The Office writes papers in the 20 languages the app speaks: Arabic, English, French, Spanish, German, Chinese, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Italian, Turkish, Indonesian, Urdu, Vietnamese, Filipino, Bengali, Swahili and Nigerian Pidgin. Arabic and Urdu papers run right to left, and a draft on your screen reads in the direction of its own text.

A paper you ask for follows the language you ask in. When your request does not settle it, the paper comes out in your app's language. To change the app's language, see Change the language.

Choose the language on Write for me

The Write new, Reply and Polish desks each have a Writing group with the language choices.

  1. Open the Office and tap Write for me.
  2. Choose Write new, Reply or Polish. On Write new, pick the kind of paper first.
  3. Under Writing, tap Output language.
  4. Pick a language. Each one is listed by its own name.
  5. Write your details in the box and send them.

Auto is the default. It follows the language of what you write or paste, and uses your app's language when the text is too short to tell. A language you pick replaces it. The rest of the desk is in Write for me.

Write one paper in two languages

Second language (A bilingual mirror) asks for the same paper twice in one draft.

  1. Under Writing, tap Second language.
  2. Pick the other language.
  3. Write your details and send them.

The draft is written as the full paper in the first language, then a dividing line, then a faithful mirror of it in the second language. The first language is your Output language, or the language of your details on Auto. Both halves sit in the same draft, so To Word or To PDF gives you one file. Leave Second language on None for a paper in one language.

Formal business Arabic

To Arabic translates into formal business Arabic. It stays faithful to your source and reads naturally rather than word for word. To English gives professional business English in the same way. Paste your text in the box on Polish, pick the action, and send.

Translate a scan

  1. Open Scan a paper and read your paper with Camera, From the album or A PDF.
  2. On the result, tap Translate.
  3. Pick a language on Translate into….

The translation replaces the text on show and keeps its headings, lists and tables. Tap Translate again to put that text into another language. Keep it saves the text on show. Reading a scan uses credits, and the app tells you when you do not have enough. More in Scan a paper.

Translate a file

  1. In the Office, tap + and, under The Office, choose Desk tools.
  2. Tap Translate it. The desk opens with Word chosen and this ask in the box: Translate the attached file, keeping its layout.
  3. Tap + and attach your file with Photos, Camera or Files.
  4. Add the language you want to the ask, then send it.

Papers that keep their own look

The Output group in Desk tools shapes the next paper the Office writes from your words: Nourva mark, Sources, Alignment, Paper size and Orientation. Two kinds of paper keep their own look instead: a paper in Hindi, Bengali or Urdu, and an edit of your own file.
