Paper size, alignment, pictures and sources

Choose the paper size, orientation, alignment, Nourva mark, sources and pictures once, and every paper the Office writes for you comes out that way.

Set it once, use it every time

Every paper the Office makes for you, whether Word, Excel, Deck or PDF, can come out the way you like it. You pick the paper size, the orientation, how lines end, whether a small Nourva mark sits at the foot of each page, whether sources are listed and whether the paper carries pictures. These choices live in Desk tools. You set them once, and they are saved to your account, so they follow you to every device you use Nourva on.

Open Desk tools

  1. Open The Office on the bottom bar.
  2. Tap + in the box.
  3. Under The Office, choose Desk tools.

The page is called What I can make. Below its quick starters you find the Pictures switch, and under it the Output group with the other five settings.

Turn pictures on or off

Pictures is a switch, and it starts on. Tap its row to flip it. The row says in words which way it is set:

  • On · drawn for each subject: the cover and the sections
  • Off · papers without pictures

With pictures on, the Office draws pictures made for your subject: one for the cover and more for the sections. A short paper gets a few, a long paper gets more, and a higher level draws more. You can also ask for more or fewer pictures in your request, up to what the paper has room for. Pictures use credits, so a paper without them costs less. See Levels and credits.

To leave pictures out of one paper only, say so in your request:

Choose the Output settings

Under Output, the two switches flip with a tap. For Alignment, Paper size and Orientation, tap the row, pick one choice from the list that opens, and you return to the page with your choice shown. Each choice is saved at once.

  • Nourva mark puts a small Nourva mark at the foot of every page. Off, the pages come without it.
  • Sources lists the sources at the end of papers that state facts. Off, the paper comes without a sources list.
  • Alignment: Automatic keeps the lines as each design sets them, Justified makes every line reach both edges, and Aligned to the start ends each line where its words do.
  • Paper size shows its measure under each choice: A4 is 210 × 297 mm, Letter 8.5 × 11 in, Legal 8.5 × 14 in, A3 297 × 420 mm and A5 148 × 210 mm.

How sources work

With Sources on, the Office first decides whether your subject needs them. A paper about a market, a health topic, a law or a company looks up pages on the web and lists the ones it uses. A CV, a letter, an invitation or a story is personal or creative, so it is written without them. Each fact taken from a source points to it by its number in the list.

A short paper lists its sources at the foot of its last page. A longer paper gets a page of its own for them. Looking sources up is billed with the paper.

Good to know

  • The Office reads your settings when it starts a paper. A change made while a paper is being made applies to the next one.
  • Your choices shape the papers the Office writes from your words. An edit of your own file, and a paper in Hindi, Bengali or Urdu, keep their own look.
  • If a choice cannot be saved, the app says Couldn't save your choice — try again and the row goes back to what it was. Pick it again.
