Merge, compress, split and convert PDFs
The five tools
PDF tools sit in the Office under Write for me. Use them when you already have the files and only need to change their shape: one PDF from many, a smaller file to send, a long PDF in pieces, or pictures in place of pages. Nothing is written for you here; the tools work on exactly what you give them.
| Tool | What it does | You pick | You get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Merge files | Joins PDFs and images into one PDF, in the order you set | Two or more PDFs or images | One PDF |
| Compress a PDF | Makes the file smaller; it is never delivered bigger than the original | A PDF or an image | One PDF |
| Images → PDF | Puts your images into one PDF, one per page, in the order you set | One or more images | One PDF |
| PDF → images | Turns each page into a picture | A PDF | A ZIP of page pictures |
| Split a PDF | Cuts the PDF into parts of equal length | A PDF | A ZIP of PDF parts |
Run a tool
You need to be signed in to run a tool.
- Open The Office on the bottom bar, then tap Write for me.
- Tap PDF tools.
- Under What to do, tap the tool you want.
- Under Files, tap the pick row, such as Pick files (PDF and images), and choose your files.
- Set the tool's option, if it has one. The options are described below.
- Tap Run now.
- When the file card appears, tap Open to see it, Share to send the file itself, or Send it to… to hand it to another part of Nourva.
Run now appears once the tool has what it needs: two files for Merge files, one for every other tool. While it works, the screen reads Running — moments…. A copy of the finished file is also kept in My files, unless it is very large.
Order the files
In Merge files and Images → PDF, once you have added two or more files, each one has an up arrow (Move up) and a down arrow (Move down). The line under the list reads The top file comes first: the top file becomes the first pages. The minus button beside a file (Remove) takes it out of the list.
Choose a level or a part size
Compress a PDF shows a Level row, set to Balanced unless you change it.
| Level | What changes for you |
|---|---|
| Light | Pictures in the file stay sharpest; the file shrinks the least |
| Balanced | A middle path between size and sharpness |
| Strong | The smallest file; pictures in it lose the most sharpness |
After a compress, the card shows how much smaller the file got, as a percentage with a minus sign. If it could save almost nothing, the card reads Already optimal. If compressing would have made the file bigger, you get your original back.
Split a PDF shows Pages per part, with a minus and a plus button around the number. Set how many pages each part holds. Every part is its own PDF inside one ZIP, and the last part holds the pages that are left.
PDF → images puts each page in the ZIP as its own picture. A very long PDF gives pictures of its first pages only.
Limits
| Limit | What it is |
|---|---|
| Files in one Merge files or Images → PDF run | A set number; the app tells you when you reach it |
| One file | A size limit |
| All files together | A combined size limit |
If you choose more files than the limit allows, the app keeps the first ones and tells you so. A file over the size limit, or files over the combined limit, stop the run, and the app says which limit was reached. Pick a smaller file, or merge fewer files at a time, then try again.
Plans and when a run fails
PDF tools are part of the paid plans. On Starter they open when your account holds credits; without them, the app says This tool is a paid feature — upgrade and try instantly. See Plans at a glance and Pricing.
If a run fails, the screen says why and keeps your files in the list, so you can tap Run now again.
| You see | What to do |
|---|---|
| Couldn't connect — check the network and retry | Check your connection, then tap Run now |
| The tool couldn't run — retry | Tap Run now again |
| Couldn't run — try again | Tap Run now again |
| Couldn't read the file | Remove the file and pick it again |
| Your session expired — sign in and send it again. | Sign in, then run the tool again |
